360 Degrees Thracian Exhibition History Meets Technology

One of the greatest things when it comes to technological advancements is that we are given a chance to see a whole new world through a digital prism. We can travel to different parts of the world in an instant, we can visit museums online, we can view galleries and exhibitions in a kind of modern way. Technology does indeed improve our experience but it also offers every single person an opportunity to never miss anything.

And now we are presented with this unique virtual experience in which the world-famous Thracian exhibition The Golden Fleece. Apart from having a closer look at different exciting pieces, the 360 degrees available on Thrace Foundation website provides plenty of additional information about some of the artefacts from the collection that might interest online attendees. For instance, you can hover over particular artefacts and click on the button in order to read more about it. You will be redirected to a dedicated page with detailed descriptions, pictures, and even myths about the given object. The interest in the exhibition is still quite strong and is present at this very day as well. The official page of the 360 degrees online tour on the Thrace Foundation website is one of the most visited pages with no sign of decline over time. But what so special about it? The Golden Fleece. The Quest of the Argonauts

Via the magnificent ancient masterpieces the public will follow the Argonauts on their route in a fabulous adventure. They will take the visitors to the ancient sacred places – Delphi and Samothrace – to the Thracian kingdoms, to the lands of the legendary Amazons, to the domain of the sun – Colchis – and to the sacred Island of Crete.
The single modules show different aspects of the faith and the ritual tradition of the ancient peoples, as well as some of the secrets of the ancient gold extraction.
The Golden Fleece remained in the collective historical memory as a symbol of the new life, fertility, the royal power, and of the alliance with the gods. The sacrifice of the sacred golden ram that had transferred Helle and Phrixus to Colchis, is represented in the center of the expositional space.
Part of the Vassil Bojkov Collection will be exposed for the seventh time.
The exposition includes gold and silver eastern vessels, red-figure vases with representations of the sanctuary in Delphi, ritual silver-gilt vessels, funeral offerings, ritual sets, etc. Тwo vessels depicting Orpheus the Thracian – one of the Argonauts – will be shown in the exhibit a silver-gilt kantharos and a rhyton – the only two that are discovered so far.
17 artefacts will be introduced for the first time to the open public in the Golden Fleece exhibition. Two of red-figure vases, a silver rhyton with a sculptured figure of the reclining elder Silenus on a panther’s wineskin – a splendid example of a sophisticated creation of the luxury. On two silver cups appears the most famous hero of Attica in the Antiquity – Theseus. The guests of the event will be able to see a gold kantharos from 12-10 c. BC, a silver amphora-rhyton with zoomorphic handles – a West-Anatolian taller work from the late 6th c. BC, and a silver kantharos with the baby Heracles on the medallion.
The exhibition is curated by Dr. Lyubava Konova – specialist on Ancient and Thracian history and archaeology, and Elka Penkova. They have prepared and realized more than 30 temporary exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad, as well as sections of the permanent expositions in the National Historical Museum in Sofia.
The Vassil Bojkov Collection comprises of more than 3 000 archaeological artefacts gathered since 2005. It includes various groups of objects, made of different materials, and dating from the Neolithic to the Late Antiquity.

On 16 March 2018, the exhibition The Golden Fleece. The Quest of the Argonauts – Vassil Bojkov Collection opened its doors for the public, after the initial opening for the media on the 15th the local residents and visitors to Sofia have the opportunity to visit the event until 10 June 2018 in the National Gallery – The Palace. The initiative is part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.

The exhibition features a selection of sixty-two cultural valuables including gold and silver eastern vessels, red-figure vases, ritual silver-gilt vessels, funeral offerings, ritual sets, etc.

Among the sixty-two pieces, sixteen artifacts are especially significant because they will be presented to the general public for the first time. The most notable among them include a silver rhyton with a sculptured figure of the reclining elder Silenus on a panther wineskin – a splendid example of a sophisticated creation of luxury, two silver cups depicting Theseus, the most famous hero of Attica in antiquity, a gold kantharos from the 12th-10th centuries BC, a silver amphora-rhyton with zoomorphic handles – a West-Anatolian work from the late 6th century BC, a silver-gilt kantharos with the image of Heracles and the centrepiece of the exhibition – a never-before-presented silver kantharos with gold ornaments and a scene depicting the sacrifice of a ram.

The purpose of the exhibition is to preserve and promote the worlds cultural and historical heritage, each item has been curated specifically to teach more about the rich heritage and different ethos of the world. “This inspiring exhibition can be easily compared to some of the leading expositions in the world – such as the ones in the Metropolitan Museum, The Hermitage in Moscow or even the Louvre” – says Prof. dr. Athanasios Sideris, archeologist and Head Curator of the Thrace Foundation.

The impressive Vassil Bojkov Collection contains archaeological material that has been accrued over several years with precious artwork and artifacts, made of different materials, and dating from the Neolithic period to the Late Antiquity.

About the author Iliyana Ivanova is a journalist and historian born in Bulgaria but currently based in London, UK. She has studied at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski and graduated from the Faculty of History with a BA in Archeology and MA in Ancient History and Thracian Studies. Throughout the years, Iliyana has organized various cultural and historical events back in Bulgaria with the idea to reveal little-known-information about the ancient world of Thrace. She continues her practice in the UK as well with the main goal to promote the history and ancient treasures of Bulgaria. Currently, her main focus is one of the most fascinating private collections of Thracian artefacts – that of the philanthropist and collector Vasil Bojkov. In literature

In Gargantua and Pantagruel, Rabelais referred to Silenus as the foster father of Bacchus. In 1884 Thomas Woolner published a long narrative poem about Silenus. In Oscar Wilde's 1890 novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, Lord Henry Wooton turns praise of folly into a philosophy which mocks "slow Silenus" for being sober. In Brian Hooker's 1923 English translation of Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac, Cyrano disparagingly refers to the ham actor Montfleury as "That Silenus who cannot hold his belly in his arms."

Professor Silenus is a character in Evelyn Waugh's first novel, Decline and Fall. He features as the disaffected architect of King's Thursday and provides the novel with one of its primary motifs. In the prophetic style of the traditional Greek Silenus he informs the protagonist that life is:

a great disc of polished wood that revolves quickly. At first you sit down and watch the others. They are all trying to sit in the wheel, and they keep getting flung off, and that makes them laugh, and you laugh too. It's great fun . . . Of course at the very centre there's a point completely at rest, if one could only find it. . . . Lots of people just enjoy scrambling on and being whisked off and scrambling on again. . . . But the whole point about the wheel is that you needn't get on it at all. . . . People get hold of ideas about life, and that makes them think they've got to join in the game, even if they don't enjoy it. It doesn't suit everyone . . . [11]

Literature for children and young adults

Silenus is a character, along with Bacchus, in the C.S. Lewis fantasy novel Prince Caspian, the second book (or fourth, depending on the order they are arranged) in The Chronicles of Narnia series. In the Percy Jackson series written by Rick Riordan, Silenus is a satyr who serves as a member of the Council of the Cloven Elders. Silenus appears as an amorous satyr in the children's story "Odysseus in the Serpent Maze," by Jane Yolen and Robert J. Harris.

Contemporary fantasy genres

Martin Silenus is the satyr-like and alcohol-appreciating poet-pilgrim in American writer Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos. In the Darkness Rising series by Kelley Armstrong it is believed that Corey Carling is a resurgent member of this supernatural race, as it was expected to be confirmed in The Rising.

Modern adaptations

Silenus is one of the two main characters in Tony Harrison's 1990 satyr play The Trackers of Oxyrhynchus which is an adaptation of Sophocles 's play Ichneutae.

Scientific nomenclature

Carl Linnaeus used the feminine form Silene as the name of a genus of flowering plant. [12]
